Degree Project: Food Waste Design Solution

During the pandemic, I became more aware of my daily food waste after periods of time when I ordered too much take-out. Subsequently, the groceries I had bought during those weeks would go to waste.

The US alone, wastes about 108 billion pounds of food. This amount of food is equal to more than $161 billion worth of food thrown away each year. What is unfortunate is that about 40% of all the food grown in the US is wasted.

Globally about a third of the world’s food is wasted each year (1.3 billion tons of year). To consider the amount of resources that are used to cultivating our food and how much of it gets wasted is shocking. This issue and my own habits inspired me to dive deeper into this topic for my senior project.
